Well over the Christmas week we forgot to submit our Christmas blog. But why can’t the joy of Christmas continue on into the New Year? So here to a Happy 2022 and an extended Christmas!
I thought it would be fun to chat about the influence of plants at Christmas. Until you take the time to contemplate them, most of us don’t realize the significance of plants and spiritual holidays. There is Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday and Easter lilies, but Christmas covers more plants than all of them put together. I don’t know all the history and I’m sure we could dig it up, but that’s not my point today. I just want to point out how plants add value to our revered days.
Of course the Christmas tree tops off Christmas so we will start there. Let’s work our way down. There is also the Mistletoe, the plant with the power of love? Or at least kisses! But there is still more Christmas plants.
Recently my wife acquired four different colours of Christmas Cactus. She has a little thing for houseplants. Amaryllis is another plants reserved for Christmas celebrations. When it comes to decorating for Christmas we can include a lot more. Holly, which unfortunately does not grow here, has those shiny thick leaves and red berries that make them a very attractive display. We also use Spruce, Pine, Fir, and Cedar for wreaths, garlands, and other decor. Even White Birch branches and red barked dogwood have been added in recent mixes. Let’s not forget Pine and Spruce cones in those candle displays. We have even made fake clusters of cranberries and other such festive fruits for decoration as well!. It makes me Ponder what makes us attracted to plants to interact and celebrate a holiday like Christmas.
Plants are likeable for the most part but it must go deeper. Evergreens have a rich history and symbolizing eternal life, it’s the tree with leaves all the time. My gut just tells me that plants embody life, growth, and natural beauty. Most people can connect at least a little with that.
I hope that this Christmas (Or this New Year) as you see the many plants of the season, you can be blessed by their life enhancing beauty. I hope you can connect to their creator… our creator, and be grateful for your life.
Emanuel! God with us! Even angels celebrated that with us.
Blessings and merry Christ-mas too all from Falk Nurseries.
