Another Season of Giving

Tis the season is a phrase we most often associate with Christmas time. But to the extent that it applies to the generosity that often happens at that festive time of the year, it could also apply to spring. This time of the year we sometimes refer to as “banquet season” as many organisations hold their annual fundraising dinners in spring when it is not the depth of winter and before people head off on summer vacations.

Constituents often see their local elected officials at these events or perhaps see them posting pictures about them on various social media platforms. More than just a good meal, these fundraisers provide an opportunity to learn about the organisations they benefit and the people who keep them operating. In the southeast, there are many examples of these organisations and how they better our communities and the lives of those who live in them.

As one example, last month I attended the annual fundraiser for Agape House. Agape House provides safe shelter and services for those who are experiencing domestic violence in the southeast region. Because of the nature of the work they do, much of it is unseen by the public. At the fundraiser however, it was evident how passionate and dedicated the staff and volunteers of the organisation are. The testimonies offered that night by women who have sought support also demonstrated the life changing impact these supports can have.

I also attended the fundraising dinner for Pat Porter Active Living Centre in Steinbach last month. The St. Patrick’s Day theme and dance and comedy entertainment made it a fun night. The money raised that evening went to support and organisation that is critical in ensuring that those 55+ in our region have programs and activities to keep them active and engaged. This is an especially busy year for the Centre as it is helping host the Manitoba 55+ Games.

Last week was the Havengroup annual dessert fundraiser. Havengroup helps to provide housing options for those in our region who need different levels of support. Annual fundraisers have been instrumental in supporting projects like the expanded Rest Haven Personal Care Home which provides quality care for those needing PCH support. The fundraising dinner highlighted the many different home environments that Havengroup operates and how they strive to make each one a welcoming home for their residents.

And, next week, I will be attending the inaugural Hope in Heals fundraiser that is being hosted by the Southeast Cancer Support Services charitable organisation. The funds will go to help provide support for those who are fighting cancer to cover costs that are outside of the healthcare system.

Each of these organisations are different, but in many ways they are the same. The are working to better the lives of local residents and are supported, in part, by the individual generosity of people in our region. So “banquet season” is much more than about getting together for a nice evening, it is about encouraging and supporting people and organisations who are in our community every day making life better. Whether through financial support, if you are able, or volunteering your time, it is always a good time to help those who are helping others.
