In less than a month the Village will be open for business. It’s just a little hard to imagine all the snow being gone and the yard being dry by then.
New Staff at MHV
This is the time of year when we begin to welcome our seasonal staff back to work at Mennonite Heritage Village. We are pleased that Jared Nickel has chosen to return in the role of Facilities Manager for a second season. Jared’s experience as a team member and his familiarity with our facility will serve MHV well. He will be responsible for the care and maintenance of the yard, facilities, and livestock. Jared will be looking for a staff assistant and a team of volunteers in the near future.
We are also pleased to have a familiar face managing our Food Services. Dora Penner previously served in this capacity in 2008 and 2009 and is returning this season. She will be responsible for all food services, including the Livery Barn Restaurant, the Short-Order Booth, and MHV Catering. We are eager to sample fresh bread and cinnamon buns when the restaurant re-opens.
During the next few weeks, we expect to hire several people to work in the Education Program, Curatorial Department, and Facilities Department. The number of people we hire will in part be determined by the number of grants we receive. Available positions will be posted on our website (www.mhv.ca), and mySteinbach.ca.
Creating Living Legacies
MHV is planning to offer Creating Living Legacies, a family-history workshop, in July of this year. This program is intended for people who are interested in writing family stories. Joanne Klassen and Eleanor Hildebrand Chornoboy have created the workshop to provide tools and inspiration to aspiring family historians.
Creating Living Legacies will be offered as a Friday evening and Saturday event. It will take place at the museum and will allow participants the opportunity to wander through the buildings and other exhibits, exposing them to artifacts that will hopefully inspire stories from their own history. A Livery Barn Restaurant meal, a behind-the-scenes tour of our lab and artifacts storage, and exposure to the Grandma genealogy database will be part of the package.
We will invite registrations when more of the details have been defined. Watch the events calendar on our website at www.mhv.ca for the specific date and time.
