I would guess that there are many people who have at one time or another heard a story from a family member or friend, enjoyed it and thought, “I need to write that down, or I will forget much of it!” The intentions are good, but so often we make excuses for not taking the time – we’re busy, or we think only “writers” do that type of story writing, or we are afraid of somehow missing details that seem important or we think we are just simply not good writers, etc. As well, there are memories, stories and impressions that we may be recording in a personal journal, assuming they are for our eyes only, not realizing that those ideas and anecdotes might prove to be invaluable to next generations.
MHV and Heartspace Writing School are combining efforts to provide a workshop to get you going on all your good intentions regarding passing on stories – yours and others’! Mennonite Heritage Village is providing the venue and food and story “triggers” (all explained in the workshop!). Joanne Klassen and Eleanor Chornoboy, facilitators from Heartspace Writing School, are providing the technique, tips, ideas and of course inspiration to get going on putting your stories down on paper.
The workshop starts on Friday, July 26, at 6:00 PM, and that session finishes at approximately 9:00 PM. (That includes a coffee break of course.) We will resume Saturday morning at 8:30 and carry on until approximately 4:00 PM. Snacks and a light lunch will be provided. If anyone needs overnight accommodations, don’t hesitate to call for ideas. There are local bed-and-breakfasts that are great hospitable places to stay for the night!
If you need more information regarding Heartspace, which is Eleanor and Joanne’s writing school, go to their website, www.write-away.net. There are stories there that inform and inspire!
Please register soon by calling us at 204-326-9661, as there is limited space available. We will only take 12 students for this first workshop. There is a $10 discount if you register before June 28.
