Grain Harvest

With the help of staff and volunteers, we are approaching the completion of our grain harvest. While most of the sheaves of grain have been stooked and collected earlier for threshing demonstrations, we did still have a number of open sheaves in the wheat field last week. So we invited Rolly Wiebe to bring his vintage McCormick combine to harvest those open sheaves. Rolly, along with Alvin Brandt, spent a few hours in the field just before the rain came and completed the job.

This was a particularly interesting exercise for me because the combine they used is the model that we had on our farm when I first started helping with the harvest. What a difference from combines used today.

Due to the wet field conditions we, together with the Southeast Draft Horse Association, threshed some wheat and some oats in the yard at our Fall on the Farm festival. We have a good supply of sheaves left for Pioneer Days 2014.
