Amber Alerts Coming to Facebook

Every year, thousands of children go missing around the world. The AMBER Alert system is an urgent bulletin system that uses highway signs, designated broadcast systems and wireless signals to announce the name and description of abducted children. From 2003 to 2012, Canada issued 64 AMBER Alerts involving 73 children. Of those, 70 were returned home.

Now, our Conservative Government is proud to take part in the launch of Facebook AMBER Alerts. With alerts showing up in Facebook-users’ newsfeeds, the online community will now be better mobilized in helping find missing children.

This builds on our Government’s strong record of helping keep children safe. For example, we passed Lindsey’s Law, which gives investigators additional tools to advance missing persons cases.  And we introduced the Tougher Penalties for Child Predators Act, which will better protect children from sexual exploitation at home and abroad.

Our Conservative Government will continue to work hard to ensure the safety of Canadians and their families.
