Seniors have spent countless hours contributing to our economy and society. Whether through working or volunteering in our communities, or nurturing their families, seniors ensured that the next generation of Canadians would be even better off than they were. Without a doubt, they have succeeded in leaving a better Canada than the one they raised their families in.
I believe that it’s important to recognize the valuable contributions that seniors have made. That’s why our Conservative Government supported seniors with funding commitments through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). The goal of the NHSP is to enhance the quality of life and to promote the full participation of individuals in all aspects of Canadian society. The objectives of the program include promoting volunteerism among seniors, engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others, expanding awareness of elder abuse, supporting social participation and inclusion of seniors, and providing capital assistance for new and existing projects and programs for seniors.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of announcing hundreds of thousands of dollars of support to seniors’ organizations right here in Provencher through the NHSP. I am pleased to say that this year 17 organizations are receiving over $300,000 through the program! Those are dollars that will serve to provide financial support to seniors’ clubs for equipment, renovations, and programming. I know that these important projects, many of which are lead and inspired by seniors, will enhance ongoing services and provide new opportunities for seniors to mentor younger generations and to take part in social activities. That’s an investment worth every dollar.
