Another Olympics has come to a close, but not without its fair share of excitement. Many Canadians tuned in to watch Team Canada compete against the world’s best over the last few weeks. Of the more than 300 athletes representing Canada on the world stage, seven Manitobans represented our province on Team Canada: Leah Kirchmann (Winnipeg), Tyler Mislawchuk (Oak Bluff), Isabela Onyshko (Brandon), Desiree Scott (Winnipeg), Nicole Sifuentes (Winnipeg), Erin Teschuk (Winnipeg), and Chantal Van Landeghem (Winnipeg).
It was great to see each of these athletes putting Manitoba on the map in Rio. They have no doubt sacrificed much in dedicating themselves to years of training. They deserve commendation for their relentless drive and determination and all Canadians can be proud of their achievements.
Closer to home, the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games took place in Steinbach August 7-13. I had the privilege of participating in the opening ceremonies along with Premier Brian Pallister and other dignitaries. The Manitoba Summer Games boasted about 1800 participants and another 1000 volunteers. It’s the largest ongoing multi-sport program in Manitoba, bringing Manitobans from all over our province together to compete, spectate, volunteer, and celebrate sport. Our very own athletes from Eastman wrapped up the games with 19 gold, 23 silver, and 24 bronze medals. Congratulations to all competitors!
Whether the Olympics in Rio or the Manitoba Summer Games, sport has a way of uniting people, building community, and encouraging healthy living. It also teaches teamwork, encourages achievement, and boosts self-esteem. These are positive benefits for us as individuals and for our communities. With a little summer still left for us to enjoy, stay active and have fun!
