Pioneer Days, MHV’s Signature Festival will again take place on the August long weekend. Beginning with the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce Pioneer Days Parade on Friday, August 3, the festival covers 4 days, concluding on Monday at 6:00 PM.
This year’s theme is A Child’s World, From Slate to Tablet, exploring the place of children in Mennonite society one hundred years ago. The exhibit in the Auditorium Gallery offers interesting artifacts and information on this subject. Activities during the festival will seek to expose children to pioneer life, by way of horse drawn wagon rides and a petting zoo, and offer more contemporary forms of entertainment by way of inflatable play structures and a children’s entertainment tent. Mr. Ken and Mr. Ben will again provide high caliber entertainment for the children.
As usual, Pioneer days will again offer great ethnic food and a variety of pioneer demonstrations. Agricultural demonstrations are always weather dependent. Given suitable weather conditions, we expect to again see the steamer in the field pulling a six bottom platform plow. We are also hoping to give our visitors the opportunity to observe the cutting of sheaves and maybe even offer them a chance to try their hand a stooking the sheaves.
On Saturday, August 4, at 11:00 AM, the Eastmenn Historical Committee of the Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society will launch their new CD, 1946 RM of Hanover Aerial Photos in the Village Centre. Additionally, both on Saturday and Sunday, Arthur Kroeger, author of the recently published book, Kroeger Clocks, will be on site to sign copies of the book.
Individuals holding a season’s pass will not need to pay admission for this event. For those who want to attend Pioneer Days for more than one day but don’t have a season’s pass there is a Weekend Pass for this event. For an individual this pass sells for $25. A family can purchase a weekend pass for $60. These passes will allow free admission all weekend.
