Not only is our windmill a central and key attraction of this museum, it is also an icon for the city of Steinbach. People come from many countries every year to see it. Families and bridal parties frequently use it as a backdrop for important photos.
It would be interesting to find out how many people have noted that MHV’s windmill sails have been resting in an unusual position recently. So far, nobody has reported concern nor asked us why the sails are out of their usual position. Normally our millers lock the sales in an “X” position. However, last week the sails were locked in a “+” position. Finding the sails in the latter position would usually precipitate a call to the millers, asking them to come and correct the situation. But in this instance, there’s a good reason behind it.
Last week Broesky Painting finished re-painting the windmill, probably the largest and most complex painting job we’ve undertaken here at MHV this summer. The white, green and red colours are once again sharply contrasting with one another while providing a bright new appearance to the structure. Painting the sails and the cap were not small tasks. A mechanical lift was required to make the higher elevations of the building accessible to the painters.
