On Parliament Hill

Looking Back – Looking Forward

During the productive spring sitting of the House of Commons, our Conservative Government was able to deliver on the priorities of Canadian families.

Our focus on strengthening the economy and helping create jobs was bolstered by passing key aspects of Economic Action Plan 2014, including measures to connect Canadians with available jobs and better train the workforce of tomorrow.

Since coming to office, our Government has had the best job creation record in the G7, and we are leading in economic growth. In fact, just last week, Finance Minister Joe Oliver announced a budgetary surplus of $.4 billion for the April to June 2014 period, compared to a deficit of $2.6 billion reported in the same period last year.  These financial results confirm that our Government is on track to balance the budget while keeping taxes low and protecting the programs and services Canadians count on, even in an uncertain global economy.

This past session, we also passed important measures that will help keep families and communities safe. The Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act will help ensure the safety of communities and victims are paramount in the decision making process for those found NCR. At the same time, we were able to introduce the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights. Victims of crime across Canada will now have enforceable rights in Canada’s criminal justice system, will be treated with the respect and fairness that they deserve, and will have a stronger voice.

Summer break in the constituency:

The summer break from Ottawa provides Members of Parliament with an excellent opportunity to hear directly from their constituents. This summer I had the pleasure of meeting many of you at the numerous summer festivals and events around Provencher and I was able to hear from you directly about issues that are important to you. I will take those issues and concerns back with me to Ottawa and make sure they become part of the national discussion.

Fall session:

As we move into the fall session of Parliament, our Government will continue to work hard and stay focused on what matters most to Canadians—keeping our economy strong and prosperous, while supporting and protecting families.
