On Sunday, September 20, Manitobans are invited to participate in the 6th Annual Open Farm Day, an initiative of Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. Numerous farms in the province will open their doors and gates to the public to give people the opportunity to see how farms of various types operate. This is a great time for the public to see the connections between the production of food and its appearance on supermarket shelves. It’s also a good time to remember how food was produced in the past.
As in recent years, Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) will again be participating in the Open Farm Day initiative by providing Supper From the Field. This is a meal prepared by our own Livery Barn Restaurant staff from locally produced food. This year the menu will include a variety of salads, locally baked bread, perogies, potatoes, roasted pork tenderloin, smoked farmer sausage, seasoned turkey breast, and raisin-apple-cinnamon bread pudding with butter-caramel sauce and ice cream for dessert.
There will be two sittings: one at 4:30 and the other at 6:30. As both usually sell out prior to the day of the event, we suggest you purchase your tickets in advance by dropping in at our office between 9:00 and 5:00 or by calling 204-326-9661 and reserving them with a credit card. Tickets for the meal are $25.00 for adults; $12.50 for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Children under the age of 6 are given free admission.
A purchased ticket for Supper From the Field also provides the opportunity to tour the entire museum anytime that afternoon for a reduced admission rate of $5.00. Free horse-drawn wagon rides will be available between 1:00 and 4:00.
Note: As of October 1, the Livery Barn Restaurant and Outdoor Village will be closed until May 1, 2016.
