Over the past several months there has been much discussion regarding Syrian refugees fleeing from their war-torn country. Many, myself included, have encouraged the new government to ensure that screening processes are in place to properly process the large number of people seeking refuge in Canada.
The first refugees have arrived and many more are now on their way to Canada as Christmas approaches.
Canada is an open and generous country, and with many refugees now on Canadian soil, we must embrace them and welcome them to Canada. We should assist them in making their transition to Canadian society as smooth as possible.
The transition will not be easy for many. They have left their friends, homes and careers in order to seek a better life for their families. They will face hurdles, and adapting to the many cultural differences may prove difficult at first.
As Canadians we understand, as we are a country of immigrants from across the globe. Our forefathers faced many of the same challenges; a new country, a new culture and a new way of life. Although it was not always easy, they adapted and were able to make the transition. We expect our newest residents to also make the same effort and embrace all that makes Canada a great and peaceful nation.
They will need our help and our friendship as they adapt to their new country and a new way of life.
I would also encourage the Canadian Government to remember refugees from other areas of the world that in many cases have been waiting numerous years for their chance at a new start. The Canadian Government must continue to process claims from these areas as well.
During this Christmas season, as always, we must remember the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, including our CF-18 fighter jet pilots, as they strive to win the fight against jihadi terrorism. These soldiers are spending the holiday season away from their own families as they work to put a halt to ISIS atrocities.
As Canadians we are fortunate to live in a free and democratic country, free from conflict, war and strife. As we celebrate the Christmas season, may we always remember how truly blessed we are.
I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in Provencher a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
