On Parliament Hill

As we near the one-year mark of the Liberal Government, one thing is clear: Liberals wasted no time getting comfortable spending taxpayers’ money.

During the last campaign, the Liberals made it quite clear that they wanted Canada’s 2015 election to be the last under the current first-past-the-post electoral system.

This week the Conservative caucus has been holding meetings in Halifax in advance of the start of the fall session of Parliament.

As the summer months come to a close and the fall Parliamentary session nears, I thought this would be a good opportunity to look back at the past summer.

As everyone who lives in rural Canada knows, there are many gaps in cellular service and S.E. Manitoba is certainly no exception. The concerns revolve not only around business development and personal communication, but also safety.

Another Olympics has come to a close, but not without its fair share of excitement. Many Canadians tuned in to watch Team Canada compete against the world’s best over the last few weeks.

Last week I joined my colleague, the Member of Parliament for Calgary – Nose Hill, Michelle Rempel, at an event commemorating the second anniversary of the Yazidi genocide.

We all know and understand the importance of ensuring Canadians have access to good jobs. It’s that regular paycheque from work that helps us put food on the table for our families, helps cover the cost of educating our children, and maybe even gives us the chance to take a vacation with loved ones every once in a while.

Recently the Parliamentary Budget Officer issued a report that said public finances in Canada have become unsustainable due to permanent increases in federal spending and ongoing provincial shortfalls.

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration recently completed its study entitled, “Immigration Measures for the Protection of Vulnerable Groups.”
