View From the Legislature

I recently invited Manitobans to nominate an educator for the Manitoba Excellence in Education Award. I proclaimed Friday, October 5th World Teachers’ Day, which is a great opportunity to recognize the teachers and educators in our lives that contribute so much.

Last week, our government announced in the Legislature that the Made-in-Manitoba Climate Green Plan will be moving forward without a carbon tax.

Recently, our government released an update on the state of our ongoing efforts to reduce the deficit left behind by the former NDP government.

This week, the Manitoba Legislature is back in session. As with most sessions, there are a number of important issues before the Legislature that need to be debated and decided upon.

This week was also proclaimed Rail Safety Week in Manitoba. This initiative came about from legislation brought forward by Dawson Trail MLA Bob Lagasse following a tragic accident in Ste. Anne.

For many years, the cellular coverage in southeastern Manitoba has been a concern to residents. It is not only an inconvenience for residents who have a difficult time getting service, it has, in times of emergencies like fires, been a significant safety concern.

Government regulations can provide important rules and protections for a variety of issues that impact Manitobans. However, over time and without review, they can also become redundant, unnecessary or inhibitors to growth.

Last week I announced that our government is investing over $54 million in school infrastructure projects across Manitoba to support upgrades and maintenance of our schools.

This week I announced that the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative directly supports approximately 13,000 post-secondary students to pursue their dreams of furthering their education.

The recent shooting of a Manitoba RCMP officer was a tragic reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officials can face every day they are on the job.
