A Winnipeg truck driver is facing numerous criminal charges after RCMP seized over $500,000 from the tractor-trailer unit he was driving.
Police say that on July 25, 2016, just before noon, Marion Budica, a 51-year-old Winnipeg man, was operating a commercial tractor-trailer unit transporting a cargo of ice cream that originated in the Greater Toronto Area and was destined for British Columbia. As a result of a traffic stop, Budica was placed under arrest for offences under the Manitoba Tobacco Tax Act when he was noted to be in possession of several cartons of contraband cigarettes. A subsequent search of the commercial vehicle unearthed in excess of $500,000 cash, which was seized along with the tractor-trailer unit.
“Our teams of traffic specialists in Manitoba are dedicated to improving public safety and eradicating crime on Manitoba Roadways,” stated Inspector Ed Moreland, officer in charge of the Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services. “That includes bringing those who commit financial crimes in the commercial trucking industry to justice. Protecting Canada’s economic integrity remains a priority for the RCMP.”
RCMP are continuing to investigate this incident.
