The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is currently investigating the death of a male who was detained by police that occurred on November 4, 2021.

On November 4, 2021, the Winnipeg Police Service notified the IIU of a call for service involving a male on the road on Osborne Street being aggressive and acting erratically. According to the notification, officers arrived on scene at approximately 7:17pm. The male was detained, handcuffed and subsequently collapsed. The Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service was in attendance, and immediately administered CPR.

IIU reports that the male was then transported to St. Boniface Hospital were he was later pronounced deceased.

The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with section 65(4) of The Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
