The Manitoba government wants to hear what people think about new five-year plans for the various industry-led programs that handle the collection, recycling and disposal of designated materials. This announcement was made by Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox.
“I encourage Manitobans, program partners, not-for-profit organizations and other stakeholders to comment on the new plans,” Cox said. “This is an excellent opportunity for all Manitobans to have input into how we shape stewardship programs in Manitoba over the next five years.”
Producer responsibility organizations (PROs) have submitted program plans for products such as paper and packaging, paint, fluorescent lights, electronics, batteries, unused medications,mercury-containing thermostats, tires and more. Currently the province has 12 industry-led stewardship programs that divert approximately 120,000 tonnes of designated materials from landfills and generate about $42 million in revenue annually, the minister noted.
The stewardship plans are available for review on the Green Manitoba website. Printed copies of the plans are available by calling 204-945-0578 or 1-866-460-3118 (toll-free). The deadline for comment on the plans is Oct. 4. Submissions can be sent via email to stewardship@greenmanitoba.ca.
