The City of Steinbach has announced that starting in February, 2022, Serving Seniors Inc. will assume the city’s Handi-Transit operations, part of a new recently signed service agreement.
“Having this service delivered by a local non-profit that is focused on serving the seniors population will be a long-term benefit to the service,” said Adam Thiessen, Manager, Corporate Services at the City. “Serving Seniors Inc. has a natural connection and awareness of the needs of Steinbach seniors.”
City officials say that Serving Seniors Inc. will look after the dispatch, driving, and maintenance of Handi-Transit vehicles while the City retains ownership, providing replacement vehicles as needed. The City will also provide grant funding to Serving Seniors Inc. to cover the operating deficit that comes as a result of the low fare rates.
Transportation for the mobility disadvantaged and seniors (ages 55+) is offered Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm. Users will still call the same number, 204-326-4055, to arrange for a ride.
