Steinbach MLA and Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen, announced that the Manitoba government is providing one-time funding of nearly $55,000 dollars to Marymound Inc. to make upgrades to existing space to enhance the safety of youth detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act (IPDA).
“It is important to ensure there is appropriate space for youth being detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act for their safety,” said Goertzen. “This funding will help Marymound modify the beds they use to support the safe, appropriate and accessible housing of youth detained under the legislation.”
Marymound has beds designated for this purpose under the IPDA legislation. However, the current configuration of the beds does not allow for optimal observation of youth while intoxicated. The one-time funding for upgrades will allow each room to be retrofitted with a toilet and sink, removing the need for youth to be moved between the detention room and bathroom by staff. It will also allow for an appropriate and safe sleeping surface and privacy masking for the washroom area.
“Marymound is deeply appreciative of the collaborative work with the government of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Police Service that will allow us to make these changes to support the safety of youth and staff,” said Nancy Parker, executive director, Marymound Inc.
The minister noted that having permanent beds at Marymound and retrofitting the site ensures appropriate service and safety, enhances accessibility, improves anti-stigma practices and aligns with recommendations outlined by the VIRGO report.
