The government of Manitoba has proclaimed the month of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, reminding motorists to share the roads responsibly and exercise caution around motorcycles.
“It is a sure sign of spring when motorcycles return to our streets, providing a practical, economical mode of transportation and an enjoyable way to travel,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Doyle Piwniuk. “We encourage all motorists to share the roads responsibly, always be on the lookout for motorcycles, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and heed traffic signals. All road users have the right to travel safely on our roadways.”
“May is when the Coalition of Manitoba Motorcycle Groups (CMMG) reminds other drivers that it’s springtime in Manitoba and motorcycles are once again back on the road,” said Doug Houghton, president, CMMG. “Motorcyclists too are reminded they must be extra cautious. After a long winter their riding skills may be a little rusty and early spring road conditions are not always favourable for riding. This proclamation will raise public awareness that motorcycle safety is everyone’s responsibility. It’s all about making motorcycling safer, and by reducing accidents and injuries, we can also positively affect insurance costs.”
The Manitoba government will continue to work in partnership with organizations such as the CMMG to promote road safety across the province, noted the minister.
