Steinbach RCMP are reporting that a 20-year-old Selkirk, Manitoba man has been charged after he assaulted a cell guard at the local RCMP detachment.
On September 18, 2022, at approximately 4pm, a cell guard at the Steinbach RCMP detachment was taking a beverage to one of the prisoners. Upon doing so, the prisoner grabbed the arm of the 75-year-old male guard and pulled it forcefully into the cell through the opening used to provide food for prisoners.
Police say that the guard sustained substantial injuries as a result of the incident and has since been treated and released from hospital. Police also noted that the prisoner was not injured.
RCMP report that 20-year-old Chase Paul of Selkirk has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and remains in custody. He has subsequently been detained on a remand warrant related to a mischief charge at the time of the incident.
Officials noted that RCMP cell guards are employees of the Corps of Commissionaires.
