The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating circumstances surrounding a call for service involving the Brandon Police Service (BPS) that resulted in a 60-year-old male sustaining a serious injury.

On December 18, 2022, BPS notified the IIU of an incident that occurred earlier that day. According to the notification, at approximately 12:30am, BPS officers were dispatched to a restaurant in Brandon in response to a call concerning two individuals who were refusing to leave. Upon arrival, officers located a male and female. The male was argumentative and refused to leave the premises. While officers attempted to assist him in leaving, he sustained a broken arm. The male was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre, where he was treated for a broken humerus.

As a broken humerus meets the definition of a serious injury under the IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.

Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
