The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle pursuit of an adult male by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) that resulted in two individuals sustaining serious injuries.
On March 5, 2023, WPS notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on March 4, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m. WPS officers were dispatched to a call for service in the area of Powers Street and Selkirk Avenue. WPS attended and observed a female lying in the street and a male flee the area in a SUV at a high rate of speed. Air1 subsequently followed the SUV observing the vehicle operating in a dangerous manner. A traffic stop was attempted in the vicinity of Selkirk Avenue and McKenzie Street and again at McPhillips Street and Kingsbury Avenue. The driver continued at a high rate of speed and drove through a red light at the intersection of Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street, striking another civilian vehicle. Police arrived on scene shortly after the collision. The driver of the SUV was transported to hospital in critical condition and the civilian driver was transported in unstable condition. Both individuals were transported to Health Sciences Centre and later stabilized.
As an internal injury that requires admission to a hospital is defined as a serious injury pursuant to regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
