The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating a motor vehicle collision involving a Winnipeg Police Service vehicle and a civilian vehicle.
On January 31, 2023, RCMP reported an incident to the IIU that occurred that day around 5:42 p.m. According to the notification, on January 31, 2023, RCMP officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision on the divided four-lane portion of the Trans-Canada Highway in the Rural Municipality of Reynolds. Initial investigation determined a vehicle was westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway when a second vehicle entered the highway from a parked position, resulting in a collision. Upon notification, the IIU advised the RCMP that it would monitor its investigation. On February 16, 2023, based on additional information received, the IIU notified the RCMP that pursuant to s. 75(1) of the Police Services Act, the civilian director determined that it is in the public interest for the IIU to assume conduct of the investigation.
