Portage la Prairie RCMP are reporting that two suspects were recently arrested and charged after police seized a quantity of drugs and cash as the result of a traffic stop in the community.
On April 9, 2023, at approximately 3:20am, Portage la Prairie RCMP officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle located on 12th Street NW, in Portage la Prairie.
Officers approached the vehicle, with four occupants inside, and spoke with the 33-year-old female driver who provided her identification. In speaking with the other passengers, officers observed open liquor in the vehicle. The three other occupants were then requested to exit the vehicle and upon the opening of the back door, the officers observed additional alcohol and a large knife.
Police say that the four occupants were placed under arrest and a further search of the vehicle located illicit pills, loaded syringes, approximately $7,500 in cash and other drug related paraphernalia.
RCMP report that the two rear passengers, a 27-year-old female and 34-year-old male, were taken into police custody and later released for a future court appearance in Portage la Prairie. The two suspects will face charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of proceeds of crime.
Police noted that the 33-year-old female driver, along with the 35-year-old female front passenger, were released without charge.
