On June 10, 2023, at approximately 6:30pm, Steinbach RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at a location on Highway 1, near Municipal Road 54E, in the Rural Municipality of Reynolds.
Investigation determined that a car with two male occupants, being driven by a 33-year-old from Waterloo, ON, was traveling west on Highway 1. The car, from the passenger side, then struck the left rear corner of a semi-trailer, which had been stopped on the northside shoulder of Highway 1.
Police say that the vehicle continued alongside of the semi-trailer and struck the driver, who had just exited the semi. The car subsequently ended up in the ditch.
RCMP report that the 31-year-old male driver of the semi, from Winnipeg, was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he was later upgraded to critical but stable. The 30-year-old passenger of the car, from Winnipeg, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was pronounced deceased on scene. The 33-year-old driver was not physically injured.
Officers say that the 33-year-old driver was administered a roadside screening test, which resulted in a warning. He was subsequently served with a 72-hour Immediate Roadside Prohibitionlicence suspension notice.
The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible.
