The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a male following a use of force encounter in Winnipeg.

On July 5, 2023, the Winnipeg Police Service advised the IIU of an incident that occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. According to the notification, East District general patrol members located a stolen vehicle parked near a housing complex on Robson Street. When officers attempted to arrest the lone male occupant of the vehicle, a use of force encounter resulted in a conducted energy weapon being deployed. Once in custody, the affected person became unresponsive and was transported to the St. Boniface Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The IIU was immediately notified of the incident, and investigators were deployed to the scene.

As this matter involves a fatality, the IIU will request the Manitoba Police Commission to appoint a civilian monitor.
