The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of an adult male in Brandon.
On Oct. 2, the Brandon Police Service (BPS) notified the IIU of an incident during an arrest that required medical attention. According to the notification, on Sept. 30 at 12:53 p.m., members of BPS responded to a call for service in the 800 block of Frederick Street, regarding a male causing a disturbance and waving a weapon.
During the male’s arrest, police deployed a less lethal firearm with a beanbag round as well as a conducted energy weapon, resulting in an injury to the affected person’s knee. The male was taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre for treatment.
Given the affected person suffered an injury but was not admitted as an inpatient, the incident does not meet the definition of a serious injury as per IIU regulations. However, the civilian director has determined it is in the public interest for the IIU to investigate.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
