Steinbach RCMP are reporting that a victim, living in the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie, was recently de-frauded of a substantial amount of money. The incident occurred on January 18, 2024, at approximately 1pm.
Police say that the suspect called the victim, advising them that their grandson was arrested and in jail. The suspect then demanded money for bail and court fees. The male suspect identified himself as a police officer and provided a file number to the victim. The male suspect also placed, what the victim describes as, a younger boy who was crying on the phone, explaining why and how he was arrested. The male suspect then advised the victim that a female would be coming by her residence to pick up the money.
RCMP report that the phone numbers used are private or unknown. It was noted that there is video surveillance of the female that picked up the money at the victim’s residence.
