The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of an adult male in Winnipeg.

On Jan. 27, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident that resulted in an injury requiring medical attention. According to the notification, on Jan. 26 at 6:02 p.m. members of the WPS attended a commercial establishment in the 2300 block of McPhillips Street in response to a call regarding a robbery with a weapon. The male subsequently entered a taxi where he assaulted and removed the driver from the vehicle. Upon officer arrival, police ordered the male from the vehicle. The man ran off through the parking lot when a second police vehicle arrived and made contact with him while he was running. The male was taken into custody and he advised that his ankle was injured. The male was transported to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg where it was determined he had suffered a broken ankle.

The civilian director has determined it is in the public interest for the IIU to investigate.
