A school bus, carrying approximately 20 children, was stopped at an intersection on Highway 52 near Kleefeld, when it was rear-ended by a Grunthal driver earlier today.
On May 26, 2017, at approximately 8:30am, St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP received a report of a traffic collision involving a pickup truck and a school bus. The collision occurred on Highway 52 at the intersection of Honey Lane Road, located 3 kilometres northwest of Kleefeld.
Early police investigation revealed that the eastbound school bus had pulled over to the shoulder and come to a stop to pick-up children. With its flashing lights on and stop sign extended, an eastbound vehicle came to a stop on the highway and waited for the bus to clear before proceeding. An eastbound pickup truck drove onto the shoulder of the Highway and was attempting to pass the stopped vehicle when it rear ended the school bus.
Police say that the school bus had approximately 20 children seated inside at the time of the collision and no injuries were reported. The children were evaluated by EMS on scene as well as at the Kleefeld School. The other eastbound vehicle was not involved in the collision.
RCMP report that the 19-year-old male driver of the pickup, from Grunthal, was treated and released at the scene for minor injuries and is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act.
Officers from the St. Pierre-Jolys Detachment continue to investigate this incident.
