The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating a death related to an officer-involved shooting, after an adult male was located with a gunshot wound in Niverville.

On June 5, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) and the RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred earlier that same day.

At approximately 12:40am, police officers were notified to look out for a stolen vehicle whose occupants may be in possession of a firearm. Air1 tracked the vehicle to Otterburne near a post-secondary institution, where at approximately 1:50am, the suspect vehicle rammed a WPS vehicle. Officers discharged their firearms at the suspect vehicle, which fled the scene.

Police tracked the vehicle and its occupants to Drovers Run in Niverville, where officers located a male with a gunshot wound. Officers requested an ambulance and provided first aid, but the male was pronounced deceased on-site.

One female is in custody and one male fled the scene.

As this matter involves a fatality, the IIU will request the Manitoba Police Commission appoint a civilian monitor.

Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
