The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a serious injury sustained by an adult male involving the Winnipeg Police Service.
On June 17, WPS notified the IIU of an incident involving an adult male who sustained a serious injury. According to the notification, on June 16 at approximately 8:20pm, officers were patrolling the 2000 block of Corydon Avenue when they observed a male yelling and leaving a store with merchandise. Officers ordered the male to stop, but he continued to run. Officers pursued the male and a use-of-force encounter occurred during which the male hit his head on the ground, rendering him unconscious. He was conveyed to hospital, where he is being monitored for a brain bleed.
As this injury is defined as a serious injury under the IIU regulation, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
