The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a male youth in Portage la Prairie.

On July 12, 2024, RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that resulted in an injury requiring medical attention. According to the notification, on July 6 at approximately 6:06pm, a member of the RCMP responded to reports of two males fighting, possibly with weapons, at the Tupper Street Bridge in Portage la Prairie. Upon arrival, the officer observed several males running from the scene. The officer was able to get close enough to one male and provide verbal commands, but the male refused to comply. The officer pulled the male to the ground and placed him under arrest. Following his arrest, the male complained of pain to his wrist. An ambulance was dispatched and transported the male to the Portage District General Hospital.

The civilian director has determined it is in the public interest for the IIU to investigate.
