The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating a fatal collision on Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 190, also known as CentrePort Canada Way.

On July 31, RCMP notified the IIU of an incident involving the death of an adult female following an attempted traffic stop. According to the notification, at approximately 4:40pm that day, an officer observed a Honda Civic on CentrePort Canada Way, traveling at 107 kilometres per hour (km/h) in a zone with a 70 km/h speed limit. The officer activated emergency lights, but the car failed to pull over and increased its speed. The car continued westbound at a high rate of speed through the intersection of CentrePort Canada Way and Sturgeon Road, running a red light and colliding with a semi-truck and trailer.

The female was transported to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, where she was pronounced deceased.

As the collision resulted in a fatality, the IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation. IIU investigators were immediately deployed to the scene. A request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.

Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
