The Manitoba government has announced that it is investing up to $12 million in over 200 community development projects through the From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for All program.
“Revitalizing and building communities from the ground up ensures individuals, children, youth and families across the province can thrive,” said Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie. “This program reflects our government’s commitments to build safe, healthy communities for all Manitobans. It is our goal to support Manitobans where and when they need us most.”
The program focuses on community-led response and revitalization efforts. Project funding is available to non-profit organizations, Northern Affairs community councils and municipalities through three streams:
- community renewal initiatives;
- community spaces; and
- healthy, safe, connected children and youth.
Approved grants under the program will support initiatives in the areas of community capacity building, community economic development, well-being and recreation, and housing and safety co-ordination supports.
“Our dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to equip individuals in Portage la Prairie and surrounding areas with the skills they need to achieve their goals,” said Cathy Dowd, executive director, Portage Learning and Literacy Centre. “We are excited about this funding, which will allow us to expand our support for youth in the community and help more individuals achieve success in their personal and professional lives.”
“Marlene Street Resource Centre has been serving this community for 25 years and we are so thrilled to accept this funding from the Manitoba government that will allow us to continue to serve our neighbourhood by providing valuable resources that we believe strengthens the community,” said Margaret Pratt, executive director, Marlene Street Community Resource Centre. “This grant will help us encourage adults and youth of all ages who live in south Winnipeg to visit our resource centre and discover how we can assist them with their goal of creating a better life for themselves and their families.”
In addition, the program will also invest up to $800,000 for additional strategic partnerships that support increased recreation opportunities for youth in high-needs areas in Winnipeg, Brandon and Thompson. More information on this initiative will be provided in the coming months, noted the minister.
