The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded an additional investigation into a incident involving a traffic stop, resulting in additional charges to an RCMP officer.
On August 29, 2023, an RCMP member observed a male driving a motorcycle dangerously and at a high rate of speed on Provincial Trunk Highway 5 near Dauphin. Attempts to conduct a traffic stop were unsuccessful. After several near-collisions, additional police units arrived and were able to contain the motorcycle.
As first reported on March 14, RCMP Cpl. Kevin Challoner was charged with failure to drive with due regard to safety contrary to Sec. 106(4) of the Highway Traffic Act.
Upon further investigation, the civilian director has determined that Criminal Code charges should also be laid against the officer. He now faces the additional charges of one count assault cause bodily harm contrary to Sec. 267(b) of the Criminal Code and one count of operate a conveyance in a manner that was dangerous to the public contrary to Sec. 320.13(2) of the Criminal Code.
On August 31, 2023, The IIU advised it had launched an investigation into the incident.
