Manitoba Justice has been informed of a cyber incident on a third-party collection service provider responsible for overdue court-ordered fines. There is currently no evidence that the personal information of Manitobans was compromised as a result of this attack.
Manitoba Justice recognizes its responsibilities to protect personal information and has taken steps to contain and mitigate any further potential exposure. The Department of Justice is working to determine how many Manitobans with overdue and outstanding fines may have been impacted.
The independent service provider is working with the Manitoba government and has brought in a leading cybersecurity firm to provide an independent assessment and conduct a forensic review. If further issues are identified, the department will immediately take appropriate steps to notify potentially impacted parties.
The incident has been reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies. The Canadian Centre for Cybersecurity and the Manitoba Ombudsman have been informed of the incident.
Manitobans with outstanding fines can visit any Manitoba court office in person or call the Provincial Offences Court general phone line at 204-945-3156 for payment information or to obtain clearance certificates needed to release overdue fine holds placed on their driver’s licence and vehicle registration. Manitobans with questions regarding collections and clearance certificates can also contact the fine collections unit at 204-945-6414.
