The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the death of an adult male following an officer-involved shooting in Winnipeg.
On November 24, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident. According to the notification, WPS members were at a retail store in the 3600 block of Portage Avenue that same day when, at approximately 5:09pm, officers reported that an officer had been stabbed in the throat and a suspect had been shot.
Officers immediately started life-saving measures on the male suspect, who was transported to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, where he was pronounced deceased. The injured officer was transported in stable condition to hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
A team of IIU investigators was immediately deployed. As this matter involves a fatality, the IIU will request the Manitoba Police Commission appoint a civilian monitor.
Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
