With ongoing tariff threats from the U.S., Premier Wab Kinew is taking part in a joint mission with other Canadian premiers in Washington, D.C.
“Right now, unity is our strength and we’re taking a Team Canada approach to our relationship with the Trump administration,” said Kinew. “Now with tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, we need to stick together as Manitobans and protect jobs in Selkirk, because we make steel right here in Manitoba.”
Premiers will meet with key members of the new Trump administration, Congress and business leaders to advocate for maintaining strong Canada-U.S. relations by addressing shared issues such as jobs and the economy, energy, critical mineral supply chains, border security and immigration. The mission includes meetings with Republican and Democratic members of congress and senators, labour representatives, and bilateral business advocates.
The premier noted this mission builds on the announcement of a Manitoba trade office in Washington, D.C., which will provide a permanent presence in the U.S. capital and have a direct line to government.
In recent months, the premier has travelled to Minnesota and North Dakota to strengthen relationships south of the border.
