The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded its investigation into a motor vehicle collision near Thompson that involved a police vehicle.
On June 1, 2024, Manitoba RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that had occurred earlier that day at approximately 3:45am.
According to the notification, an RCMP officer was transporting an adult male from Split Lake to Thompson when the police vehicle entered the ditch. Emergency medical services responded and the male was transported to hospital, where it was determined he had fractured vertebrae. He was subsequently transferred to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg for surgery.
The IIU assumed responsibility for the investigation in accordance with Sec. 66(4) of the Police Services Act. IIU investigators were assigned to this investigation. One subject officer and one witness officer were designated. Investigators also spoke with the affected person.
Following due consideration of all the circumstances and evidence, the civilian director concluded the actions of the subject officer did not warrant charges. Accordingly, the matter is now closed.
