The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding an injury sustained by an adult male involving the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS).
On January 9, 2025, MFNPS notified the IIU of an incident that occurred earlier that day at approximately 6am. According to the notification, MFNPS officers were attempting to stop a vehicle involved in an earlier incident. The vehicle slid into the ditch and came to a stop, and a male was observed running from the vehicle. A K9 unit tracked a male to a house trailer, where he was hiding. The male threatened to shoot officers and displayed a weapon. While surrendering to police, the male lunged at members with an object in his hand. A K9 dog was deployed and bit the male.
Emergency medical services transported the male to Portage District General Hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries.
As the male suffered a serious injury and was admitted to hospital, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
