The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded an investigation into a motor vehicle collision that occurred in September of 2023. As a result, a Brandon Police Service (BPS) officer is now facing criminal charges.
On Sept. 24, 2023, members of the BPS responded to a call for service regarding a man attempting arson. The man fled the scene, resulting in a police vehicle colliding with the man in front of BPS police headquarters. He was then taken to Brandon Regional Hospital, where it was determined he had a broken arm.
The civilian director has determined charges should be laid against the officer. BPS Const. Myran Hamm faces one count of assault causing bodily harm contrary to Sec. 267(b) of the Criminal Code and one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm contrary to Sec. 320.13(2) of the Criminal Code.
The IIU issued a news release on Sept. 26, 2023, advising it had launched an investigation into the incident.
