The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a serious injury sustained by an adult male involving the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS).
On February 18, WPS notified the IIU of an incident involving an adult male who sustained a serious injury. According to the notification, on February 17 at approximately 11:28 p.m., officers were in a parking lot on Henderson Highway when they saw a vehicle pass at a high rate of speed. Police caught up to the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle fled at high rate of speed from the area of Henderson Highway and Johnson Avenue. Officers indicated they were not attempting to pursue the vehicle but following at a distance before losing sight of the vehicle.
The WPS helicopter (Air1) subsequently found the suspect vehicle, which had rear-ended another vehicle and crashed into a light standard on the northwest corner of Chief Peguis Trail and Henderson Highway.
A passenger from the suspect vehicle tried to run away but was apprehended by police a short distance from the crash scene.
The driver of the suspect vehicle was trapped inside and needed to be extracted by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. Both people were transported to hospital for treatment.
The driver of the vehicle sustained a fracture to his leg and suffered hypothermia due to the time need to extract him from the vehicle.
As a broken leg is defined as a serious injury under IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
