The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded its investigation into the death of an adult male following an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie.
On May 24, 2024, RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred at 12:30am the same day. According to the notification, officers were patrolling the area of Highway 52 near La Broquerie after receiving numerous calls regarding a suspicious male. Police located a vehicle stopped on Highway 52, where a male armed with an edged weapon was assaulting the driver. Police ordered the male to step away and he approached officers while still holding the edged weapon. An officer discharged a service firearm, striking the male. CPR and first aid were provided, but the male was pronounced deceased on scene.
As this matter concerned a shooting fatality during arrest, the IIU assumed responsibility for the investigation in accordance with Sec. 65(4) of the Police Services Act. IIU investigators were assigned to this investigation. One subject officer and five witness officers were designated. Three civilian witnesses also provided statements.
Following due consideration of all the circumstances, the civilian director will not be authorizing charges. Therefore, the IIU investigation is completed and the matter is now closed.
