The RCMP would like to remind the public to be diligent and aware that there are numerous mail, text, internet and telephone scams and frauds that occur each year. These scams and frauds can occur in small and large communities anywhere in Manitoba.
Most recently, on August 14, 2017, Roblin RCMP Detachment received complaints that an individual was going door to door in the community and telling residents that he owned a driveway paving business located out of Winnipeg. He then tried to sell the residents a driveway sealing product. It was quickly discovered that the suspect did not have a business license to operate in the community.
Some residents paid for the product and for its application. Once the money was paid, the individual applied the “sealant”. In reality, the fraudster was applying a thin paint or substance that deteriorated very quickly and could be easily washed off.
“We know that some people have lost money because of this scam and want to remind everyone to never hand over money to any individual without doing some due diligence,” said Sgt. Paul Manaigre of the Manitoba RCMP. “Getting a quote in writing is essential, paying only a portion of the invoice before the work is completed, viewing their previous work, doing some checking on-line and getting and calling references are all things people can do to protect themselves.”
Roblin RCMP continue to investigate this scam and are asking anyone in the community who may have been affected to contact the detachment at 204-937-8054.
