On August 16, 2017, just after 4pm, Yellowhead RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 45 at the intersection of Road 122 West, approximately five kilometres east of Elphinstone, Manitoba.
Investigation determined that a car traveling south on Road 122 West failed to stop at the intersection and collided with an SUV traveling east on Highway 45. There were four people in the southbound car. Occupants in the SUV included a female driver and a male passenger.
Police say that the front passenger in the car, a 31-year-old female from Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The remaining passengers in the car, a 29-year-old male and a 30-year-old female, both from Waywayseecappo First Nation, were transported to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the car, a 27-year-old female from Waywayseecappo, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The female driver of the SUV and her 52-year-old male passenger, both from Keeseekoowenin, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
RCMP report that the 27-year-old female driver from Waywayseecappo is facing numerous charges, including impaired driving causing death.
Police believe that all occupants were wearing seatbelts. Yellowhead RCMP and an RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
