On August 26, 2017, shortly before 7pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 16 for a reported motor vehicle collision involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian.
Police investigators believe an eastbound semi trailer struck a male pedestrian as he was walking out onto the Highway. The pedestrian, a 39-year-old man from the Portage la Prairie area died as a result of being hit by the semi. The 51-year-old driver of the semi was not injured.
RCMP report that Highway 1 eastbound was closed for several hours for the investigation but later reopened at 9:40pm. Portage la Prairie RCMP along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist continue to investigate this incident.
