Steinbach RCMP are warning the public that a CRA phone fraud has once again made its way to at least one local resident.
On September 14, 2017, Steinbach RCMP received a report from a local resident stating that he had been contacted by an unknown individual claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. The individual in question stated that the resident owed several thousands of dollars in back taxes. The individual then stated that if he did not pay, an arrest warrant would be issued and he would be arrested by the police. The resident was then instructed to pay the owed money through an ATM and was provided with a bar code to complete this action.
This is a common fraud that is not unique to Steinbach. Police are warning the public to ignore these fraudsters as the CRA never would make a request as described.
Should anyone else be contacted by someone claiming to be from the CRA, Steinbach RCMP say that you contact CRA directly – not the fake number that they provide. You can also call the Steinbach RCMP at 204-326-4452 to report the incident.
